The vision

A sacred fire, carried hand to hand

The Mahayatra is envisioned as a sacred fire carried across the Badaga community’s villages — a small Skanda utsava-murti taken hand to hand, hatti by hatti, across the four Seemai of the Nilgiris. It is designed around five sacred fires, each timed to a festival already woven into the community’s calendar, and closing on a single day set aside for the whole community.

This is a proposal, not yet a confirmed undertaking. It is currently before the Guru Parampara — Sri Sargurunatha Mahamuni and Sri Sacchidananda Guru Naveen Sai — for guidance and blessing. What follows is the vision as it stands today; dates and details will be confirmed here once that blessing is given.

Five sacred fires

One flame, five festivals, one closing day

Each fire is set to coincide with a festival the community already keeps — so the yatra walks with the calendar, not against it. Exact dates are fixed by the Panchangam and will be announced here.

1Skanda ShashtiSura Samhaaram — Skanda’s victory over Surapadman, the victory of dharma over adharma. The first public fire.
Fire 1
2ThaipusamThe Vel festival — Parvati’s spear given to Skanda. Millions walk to Palani every year. The first big public yagam.
Fire 2
3Maha ShivaratriThe greatest night of Shiva, the all-night vigil of inner purification. The Aghora Sambavam Maha Homam.
Fire 3
4Sri Rama NavamiDharma personified — Maryada Purushottama. The Rama Dharma Yagam, for the family and for the silenced patriots.
Fire 4
5Badaga DayThe community’s own day of identity, heritage and unity. The Maha Poornahuti — where the final fire lands.
Fire 5 · closing
The closing day — Badaga DayA single day set aside for the whole community — where the five fires come to rest together. Proposed for 15 May 2027.

Five areas of renewal

What the Mahayatra is walking toward

The yatra takes its name from “Sathru Samhaara” — the destruction of an inner enemy. Nineteen such enemies have been named in the full proposal, grouped into five areas of community life.

At Home

Strengthening the family — parenting, marriage, and the everyday bonds a community is built on.

On the Land

Caring for the hattis, the Badaga language, and the agrarian life of the hills, so none of it is quietly lost.

In the System

Education, livelihood, and unity — the structural gaps that hold a community back from its own talent.

Of the Spirit

Renewing sincere practice, honest teaching, and the courage to speak and act with conviction.

The Maha Sathru

Underneath all the rest, seeing clearly — choosing reality over illusion, in how the community sees itself.

19 inner enemies named in the full proposal · 5 areas of community life

The nineteen Sathrus

Internal enemies — inside our homes, our hattis, our habits

No political party, no market and no outside agency can defeat these for the community. Only the community can. Choose a circle to read what each one looks like in daily life.

Ritual architecture

The trinity of fires — cleanse, destroy, plant

Two yagams and a planting: the Aghora Sambavam cleanses inner darkness, the Sathru Samhaara destroys the outer enemies, and the Beeja Sthapana plants the seeds of rebirth.

1CleanseAghora Sambavam

Burns inner darkness — ego, addiction, illusion, maya, gatekeeping.

Fire 3 · Maha Shivaratri
2DestroySathru Samhaara

Burns the outer enemies — land loss, language loss, the collapse of tea and farming, education and jobs.

Fires 1, 2 and 5 · Skanda Shashti, Thaipusam, Badaga Day
3PlantBeeja Sthapana

Plants the rebirth — the 19 Seed Programs, one for each Sathru, launched on Badaga Day.

Fire 4 · Rama Navami, and the Badaga Day launch

The deity ladder — invocation order

Built from the ground up. Order matters — the village’s own goddess speaks first at every ritual.

The utsava-murti is carried to every Badaga hatti — around 400 of them — in waves, with a rest between each so that no one burns out.

The Hatti Doot

One coordinator for every village, appointed in public. The standing link between a hatti and the yatra — before, during and long after. Each Doot receives an uttariya sash, the Hatti Register, the Vrat Handbook, a Doot ID and WhatsApp access.

The copper plate

Each village’s chosen Sathru and its seed commitment are engraved on a copper plate at the village event. It rests at the village temple, is carried by the Doot to the Mandapam, installed at Skanda’s feet — and offered at the Poornahuti on Badaga Day. Together the plates bind ~400 hattis into one body.

After the fire

The fire is not the end — it is the ignition

On Badaga Day the Sankalpa Charter is signed and the 19 Seed Programs launch — each Sathru gets a three-year, on-the-ground counter. The goals set for the three years that follow:

300hattis with parenting circles
500sober-year commitments
100Badaga language schools
1Badaga Tea FPO — 500 farmers
1,000mentor–student pairings

Rooted in precedent

Not unprecedented — only specific

The proposal draws on a long dharmic tradition of walking, vowing and gathering to renew a community. Every fire stands on centuries of that tradition; only the scope, and the focus on one community, is new.

What we add
One communityNo precedent is focused on a single community naming its own internal enemies. This one does — nineteen of them.
Fire, charter and programmesNot just ritual, not just charity — sacred fires, a written Sankalpa Charter and 19 Seed Programs, braided together.
ContinuityA three-year Sankalpa with named leads and regular reports, so the movement outlasts the fire.

The heritage calendar

Every anchor the yatra binds itself to

The Mahayatra is not placed on the calendar — it is woven into it. Each festival below carries centuries of weight, and lends it to the yatra.

DevvahabbaThe ancient Badaga Shaiva festival of ancestor and Devar worship — the community’s own dharmic root, and the launch anchor.
Vinayaka ChaturthiThe remover of obstacles, invoked before every beginning — the route blessing.
NavaratriNine nights of the Devi — Shakti walks with the yatra.
Skanda ShashtiSura Samhaaram — the first public fire, and the dress rehearsal for Badaga Day.
Karthigai DeepamShiva as infinite flame — the Maha Sankalpa Night, when every hatti lights its lamps together.
MargazhiThe Brahma Muhurta of the year — the home of the 50-day Mandala Vratam.
Hethai HabbaThe community’s grandest festival, Hethai Amman at Hubbathalai — the largest audience of the year.
Bhogi & PongalBurning the old, the boiling over of prosperity — community feasts in every hatti.
ThaipusamThe Vel festival — the first big public yagam.
Maha ShivaratriThe all-night vigil of inner purification — the Aghora Sambavam Maha Homam.
Sri Rama NavamiDharma personified — the Rama Dharma Yagam.
Panguni UthiramThe day of divine weddings — the launch of the Youth–Marriage Seed Program.
Akshaya TritiyaThe “never-diminishing third” — the day the Foundation Endowment is seeded.
Badaga DayThe community’s own day — the Maha Poornahuti, where the final fire lands.
Vaikasi VisakamMuruga’s birthday — an optional epilogue of blessing.
